Papal Fashion and Danilo Donati
Being Pope back in 1500 really wasn’t all about religion…it was pretty much like a cross between being a gangster and a celebrity. The Papal states constantly fought with each other, murdered and raped opposing family members and of course stole everybody’s art. Money, politics and power came before godliness with these people. The congregation was kinda like our modern day celebrities. So its obvious that they only wanted to have the most extravagant parties and be seen wearing THE best, most showy clothing imaginable. To imagine that people made this clothing with the idea that they were to be worn by Gods representatives on Earth and the Pope himself is garbed in what is really thought to be for the Almighty means that these clothes are probably made with some kinda intense, weird energy aswell….Its really amazing to have a look at some of the work and creepy as hell symbolism that goes into these ceremonial pieces. Heavenly silvers and golds aplenty, perfect for fooling us all. People have literally devoted their lives and dropped dead on the spot while embroidering the smallest segment of a garment just to have the honor of having the evil Pope wear it.
From a book i just read about Lucrezia Borgia by Sarah Bradford…
“Cesare (the Popes son) set up a magnificent Tableaux- a fountain richly worked with depictions of cobras and other poisonous snakes, while in another room there was a wood in which wandered seven mummers dressed as animals. They were all dressed in satin according to the colour of the animal they represented and came in one by one, dancing before the Pope.”
One of the first things that Dusty and i discovered we both shared in common when we both met was that we both loved Danilo Donati and it was just so cool because i never met anybody that really ever knew about him and there really isnt anything much on him on the internet either. He was responsible for the clothing and amazing Busby Berkley style sets in Flash Gordon which is one of our favorite films too. He also did Caligula which has amazing clothing and sets…BUT one of the best scenes featuring his work is in Fellini’s Roma…The ecclesiastical fashion show. Its the best fashion show i ever saw and has no doubt been inspiring for people like Alexander Mc Queen. You have to watch the whole 10 minutes of the Youtube i posted because its the best, best, best thing ever. I also really love Ken Russell’s rock star Pope in Lisztomania where Ringo plays the Pope in collaged robes featuring the REAL Saints of our times..Marilyn, Elvis, Chaplin…Garbo…
